The Spirit of Jasper Locamotive

The Power Behind Your Journey

The Spirit of Jasper is more than a train—it’s a historic rail experience. This restored 1952 General Electric 80-ton switch engine offers scenic excursions through Southern Indiana, blending nostalgia with modern comfort.

Unlike long-haul locomotives, switch engines—or switchers—are built for short, powerful movements. They assemble and organize railcars, ensuring smooth operations. Today, the Spirit of Jasper brings that same precision to unforgettable passenger experiences.

The Club Car #200

Timeless Travel in Style!

Originally built for the Milwaukee Railroad in 1947, Club Car #200 once carried overnight passengers between Chicago and Seattle. Acquired by the City of Jasper in 2006, it was restored in 2009 with a cozy club-seating layout. Today, it comfortably accommodates 46 passengers (40 in dining configuration).

The Lounge Car #300

Beautifully Reimagined!

Built in the 1930s, Lounge Car #300 once served as a “coffin car,” transporting fallen soldiers from World War II and the Korean War to their hometowns. (Don’t worry—it’s not haunted!) Acquired by the City of Jasper in 2006, it was transformed into a dining car in 2007 through the efforts of local businesses and volunteers, preserving its history while creating a unique and inviting space.

In 1978, an agreement with the Southern Railway Company granted the Museum a total of sixteen miles of track stretching from West Baden, Indiana, approximately one mile north of French Lick, to Dubois. South of Dubois, the track extends through Jasper and into Huntingburg, owned by the Dubois County Railroad. The Spirit of Jasper train exclusively operates on this southern route to Huntingburg, where the railroad interchanges with the Norfolk Southern Railroad line.
